VMware to Hyper-V

VMware to Hyper-V Migration

Broadcom’s VMware licensing changes have pushed many organizations to move. We move them to Microsoft Hyper-V on Dell hardware.

Why organizations are moving

  • VMware is now sold as subscriptions only, with bundles and core minimums that raise the price for small and midsize sites
  • Many renewal quotes have come in at several times the previous cost
  • Hyper-V is included with Windows Server Datacenter licensing many organizations already need
Why organizations are leaving VMware: expensive licensing and migration difficulties

How we do it

  1. Assess: inventory hosts, VMs, storage and backups; review your Windows Server licensing
  2. Design: a Hyper-V failover cluster on Dell PowerEdge with PowerStore or PowerVault storage
  3. Build: install and test the new cluster alongside the old one
  4. Migrate: convert and move VMs in planned windows
  5. Finish: re-point backup and monitoring, document everything, retire the VMware hosts

Experience

Our engineers ran VMware environments for years, and have moved utilities, manufacturers, healthcare organizations and nonprofits to Hyper-V. Between March and April 2026 we ran four VMware to Hyper-V migrations at the same time, more than 100 virtual machines in all, and finished every one on schedule. See how our migrations run.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to VMware?

For most small and midsize organizations already running Windows Server, Microsoft Hyper-V is the most practical VMware alternative: it is mature, widely supported and included with Windows Server.

Is Hyper-V included with Windows Server?

Yes. The Hyper-V role is part of Windows Server. Windows Server Datacenter licensing covers unlimited Windows virtual machines on a licensed host, and Standard covers two.

How much downtime does a migration take?

Each virtual machine is moved in a planned window, typically after hours. Most users never notice.

Can we keep our existing Dell servers?

Often, yes, if the hardware is supported for current Windows Server. We check compatibility during the assessment and only recommend new hardware where it is needed.

Why are organizations leaving VMware?

After Broadcom acquired VMware, licensing moved to subscriptions sold in bundles with core minimums, and many renewal quotes rose sharply.
